You may not have heard of them, but the Société des Hôtels Littéraires is celebrating its 10 anniversary this year. To date, this privately owned hotel group offers guests a cultural and literary romp through a choice of six hotels, three in Paris & three others throughout France. These hotels are dedicated to the most celebrated French authors, from Jules Verne to Marcel Proust. The spring of 2024 will bring a new addition, the Hôtel Standhal in Nancy.
Founder & President, Jacques Letertre, a great aficionado of French literature explains: «I created the Société des Hôtels Littéraires to share my love of books with the thousands of visitors whom I do not know, but who, I’m sure, would be happy to find an author or a book by chance on a trip to Paris, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand or Biarritz.»
The hotels offer a unique décor inspired by each writer’s universe, the personalized rooms are dedicated to the author’s character or a work, including original watercolors by illustrator Jean Aubertin. Each library has over 500 books in French, English and most other languages.
Guests are invited to discover each location or town in the footsteps of the author and can enjoy the hotels’ exhibition spaces filled with art collections, art bindings, paperback editions rare books and manuscripts. The hotels also host theater nights throughout the year.
Each hotel has earned the international Green eco-lable and certification.
The three Paris hotels:
• Le Swann in the 8th district of Paris was opened to mark the hundredth anniversary of the publication of Swann’s Way, making it the new Parisian address of writer Marcel Proust.
• Located in one of the prettiest streets in Montmartre, the Rue Tholozé, is the Hôtel Littéraire Marcel Aymé.
• In a small street in the 10th Arrondissement, «as short as a sonnet, » & near the Gare de l’Est, where the poet arrived from Charleville, is the Hôtel Littéraire Arthur Rimbaud.
The three regional hotels:
• Biarritz: The Jules Verne, between the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean—from where he drew inspiration--& the town center, pays tribute this internationally renowned author.
• Clermont-Ferrand: The Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte, is located in shaded sqare in the center of Clermont-Ferrand, paying tribute to this very unsung writer.
• Rouen: The Hôtel Littéraire Gustave Flaubert sits in the historic center of Rouen, near the Place du Vieux-Marché. It pays tribute to its native son who spent most of his life there.
Every Hôtel Littéraire is also either a member of Best Western’s Premier or Signature Collections.
