NEW YORK, NY, November 5, 2013 – This winter, the region of Alsace will alight with Christmas markets in its storied cities and villages from the end of November to the New Year. With a unique amalgam of French and German influences, from Hansel-and-Gretel-like architecture to hearty cuisine, Christmas time is the ideal moment of the year to visit the region. Featuring charming stands brimming over with artisanal products along with enticing aromas of gourmet delights wafting through the air, the Christmas markets have been attracting visitors since the 16th century.
The history of the Christmas markets began in Strasbourg 444 years ago in 1570 under the influence of the Protestants battling the "extravagant" Catholics. This year, the Strasbourg Christmas market will feature: a giant Christmas tree planted in Place Kléber, an ice skating rink at the foot of the famed Cathedral of Strasbourg, a myriad of concerts and a whole host of other activities allowing visitors to discover the wide variety and scope of Alsatian traditions.
The other major Christmas markets will be held in Colmar, Kaysersber and Riquewihr, along with smaller village markets throughout the region.
