Palace of the Popes welcomes “Amazônia”

Franco-Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado
Amazônia Exhibition
Press release

From June 27 to November 30, 2022, Avignon's towering Palace of the Popes will be the venue for the exhibition “Amazônia” by the celebrated Franco-Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Over 200 photographs are accompanied by screenings and a new musical composition by French composer and performer, Jean-Michel Jarre.

Sebastião Salgado explored Brazil's Amazon region for over seven years, photographing the tropical rain forest, the rivers, the mountains and the people who live there. This deep universe, where the immense power of nature can be felt like nowhere else on earth, is the source of the gripping photographs, the images that surged before the photographer's eye.

Accompanied by a sound creation, a veritable world-symphony imagined by Jean-Michel Jarre starting with tangible sounds from the forest, the exhibit shares the voices and words from the Amerindian communities that have been photographed.

Created and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado, this immersive exhibition that takes viewers to the heart of the Amazonian forest is an invitation to see, to hear, and to think about biodiversity and our place as human beings in the living world.

Guided visits are available throughout the entire duration of the exhibition. For more information please click on avignon-tourisme.com
